Argos – Get Set for Advent

Please stand and give a long, fervent, raucous round of applause to Argos.

Why?

Not just because this is the FINAL entry in our #ForfrontAdvertAdvent series, but primarily because the retailer has abandoned those inane blue aliens at long last.

It actually dropped them in the summer and immediately revamped its advertising with slick, product-heavy campaigns, but it’s with relief that Argos’ Christmas ad is also 100% alien-free.

Morrisons – Christmas Advert 2014

Wait a second, is that Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff harvesting Brussels sprouts in a field at the start?

Harrods – The Land of Make Believe

Boots – #SpecialBecause

There are three main Christmas advertising techniques in 2014.

1. The cheap and cheerful, “look at our products!” approaches of retailers such as Aldi and Lidl.

2. Similar product demonstration ads but with slight quirky, fun or magical aspects; from shops like M&S, Tesco and Halfords.

3. Or the most commonly abused yuletide advertising tactic of them all; aiming to hit you right in the emotional jugular. This year dominated by brands like Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and John Lewis.
